"XOX" was born after I purchased a white ukulele because I needed something that resembled a white Les Paul to go with a Buckethead costume I was putting together for Halloween that year:
Suffice to say, that ukulele was a REALLY quality instrument and made me kinda obsess over playing it. Two songs came from playing with it. One will only be available on the deluxe version of the album, and the other is "XOX".
This song was written in a stream of consciousness rather quickly. Before I knew it, it ended up sounding like some sort of old school, 1950s transatlantic show tune from the golden age of Hollywood. A part of me was thinking of fleshing it out with a string section and all that, but I just felt that there was such a potent energy to the immediacy of how bare it sounded; just hearing my vocal with a ukulele. Considering all the crazy production I have going on all over the double album, I felt it would be an intimate and refreshing change of pace to hear just me, an instrument, and nothing else. Ultimately, that ended up working best for the narrative arc of the entire album.
But who knows, maybe I'll flesh it out more sometime in the future.
