Minneapolis is one of my favorite places in the world. It's almost as diverse as Queens (my hometown), it's absolutely beautiful during the summer, and the people get even warmer/kinder to one another during the winter. The latter is precisely why it's been under attack these past few months; Minneapolitans largely oppose our current administration because they believe in freedom, justice, due process, and THE CONSITITUTION. Things that our current administration conveniently forgets to uphold when it suits their agenda.
Make no mistake about it folks:
We are now facing Nazis in America.
They are White Nationalists.
They are Domestic Terrorists and Extremists.
And they have infiltrated our government.
The citizens of Minneapolis are on the ground, filming all the atrocities committed by ICE, and in return, they are being illegally detained, abused, raped, and even murdered. Despite this, they continue to document and protest peacefully. How freaking inspiring and ACTUALLY AMERICAN is that? Despite this, I can't tell you how many of my Minneapolis friends are having their businesses struggle and their families live in fear. However, there are 4 ways you and I can help:
Donate to On-The-Ground Movements That Immediately Help Those Who Need It Most
The following are places to donate that I have under good authority are expeditiously providing actual assistance:
- Safe Haven (GoFundMe) - These are people who are at the Whipple Building every single day to help recently released detainees. Most of whom experienced trauma, isolation, and abuse, only to be sent out with no phone, no ID, no ride home, and often without appropriate clothing in frigid temperatures.
- Minneapolis Rapid Response Emergency Defense Fund (GoFundMe) - Teams raising funds to support PPE and safety equipment for Minneapolis community members legally observing and defending themselves against unconstitutional federal immigration enforcement.
Send funds directly to families of color that are too afraid to leave their homes or send their children to school in Columbia Heights (which has the highest number of kids go missing since ICE's arrival). Columbia Heights School Teacher Marie Nelson is passing along funds directly to one of the most horribly impacted neighborhoods & families as they don’t trust strangers in their homes and aren’t even sending kids to school. Venmo @Marie-Nelson-11 and she is happy to send updates regarding the specific families she’s working with.
Speak Up & Use Your Voice
Pseudo-sciolist losers like Kanye West might be fine with Heiling Hitler.
Rapacious vultures like Taylor Swift might be fine with selling Nazi necklaces and letting ICE use her music on 2 of their ads.
There's a special place in hell for people like them and if you come across them, CALL THEM OUT. You must understand that this is all real, and that the time for giving aid and standing our ground is now. Do not be afraid to use your voice if you don't agree with them or ICE or this administration; post/re-share their atrocities, email/call your senator and governor to let them know this is not what you're paying your taxes for.
And if you do agree with what's going on, I honestly hope you get mentally and spiritually evaluated.
This isn't about politics. This is about humanity.
Because for some people, when we say "never again", we fucking mean it.
Peace in our time,
